Freeze Dried Saskatoon Berry Powder
Saskatoon Berries are a native wild berry to Canada and have been relied on by our aboriginal people and early settlers as a staple food for hundreds of years. Wild Saskatoons grow throughout the prairies and range as far north as the Yukon and south as New Mexico. Most prolific throughout the prairies, Saskatoon berries are known by several names including June erry, Service Berry and Sugar pear. As an important source of food and medicine for Aboriginal people(s), the berries were eaten fresh, or prepped for storage by steaming and mashing, then shaped into cakes and dried - allowing these cakes to be broken and added to soups and stews. Pemmican, a mixture of dried meat, saskatoon berries & melted fat, was also an mportant storage food for many, as it would keep for a long time and provide sustenance during the Winter. Traditionally the leaves and fruit were also dried to make tea, and the bark and roots were used as medicine to treat ailments including eye and stomach problems. Rich in polyphenol anthocyanins, Saskatoons are rich in antioxidants and have 2x more Fiber, otassium & Iron, and 4x more magnesium than Blueberries! Our Saskatoon Berries are grown in Canada, picked at peak ripeness and then immediately freeze-dried to retain their important nutrients. The berries are not treated or sprayed - and left to flourish and ripen naturally in the golden Saskatchewan sunshine.
